Steps to Install Audit Vault Agent in Linux Database Server

In this article, we’ll walk through the step-by-step process of installing the Audit Vault Agent on a Linux Database Server. The process involves configuring the Audit Vault Server, downloading the agent, transferring it to the target server, and activating it using an activation key.

Prerequisites:

Before starting the installation, ensure the following prerequisites are met:
  • You have administrative access to both the Audit Vault Server and the target Database Server.
  • The Audit Vault Server is already installed, configured, and accessible over the network.
  • The network connectivity between the Audit Vault Server and the Database Server is properly configured (no firewall restrictions blocking communication).
  • Java is installed on the Linux Database Server.
  • Required ports open in the firewall for communication between both systems.

Step 1: Log in to the Audit Vault Server Console

Access the Audit Vault Server console using your browser and log in with the ADMIN user credentials.

Once you’re logged in, you’ll be able to manage agents, register database servers, and download required components.

Step 2: Register the Database Server as an Agent

Navigate to: Agents → Agents → Register

Here, you’ll need to provide:
  • Name: A unique and identifiable name for your database server.
  • IP Address: The IP address of the Linux Database Server.
  • After entering the details, click on Save to complete the registration.

Step 3: Copy the Activation Key

After successful registration, the Audit Vault Server generates an Activation Key for the agent.
  • Go to the Agents section and check the Agent Status.
  • Copy the Activation Key displayed for the registered agent.
Keep this key secure as it’s used to authenticate the agent.

Step 4: Download the Audit Vault Agent

Next, download the agent software package from the Audit Vault console.
Navigate to: Agents → Downloads
Click on the Download button to download the agent.jar file.
This file contains the necessary components to install the agent on your target database server.

Step 5: Transfer the Agent to the Database Server

Once the agent.jar file is downloaded, transfer it to your Linux Database Server where you plan to install the agent.
You can use any secure file transfer method like SCP, SFTP, or WinSCP depending on your environment setup.

Step 6: Install the Audit Vault Agent

On the Database Server, navigate to the directory where the agent file was transferred.
Execute the installation process for the Audit Vault Agent.

Step 7: Start and Activate the Agent

After installation, start the agent process.
When prompted, paste the Activation Key that you copied earlier from the AVDF console.
Once entered, the agent will communicate with the Audit Vault Server and complete the activation.

Step 8: Verify the Agent Status

Return to the Audit Vault Server console and check the Agents section.
The Agent Status should now display as Running, indicating successful installation and activation.

Final Notes:

  • Always verify the agent status after rebooting the system.
  • Configure your database audit data source to use this agent.
  • Keep the agent software version consistent with the Audit Vault Server version.

Conclusion:

You’ve successfully completed the installation and activation of the Oracle Audit Vault Agent on a Linux Database Server.
This setup ensures secure and centralized collection of audit data, helping you maintain compliance and strengthen your database security posture.
